A message from the Small Talk Collective … Small Talk will be back at Harvest Noon and 8eleven Gallery again this summer!
We’re seeking submissions for a couple of small talks this summer —
That’s right it’s a fabulous fifth season of your favourite outsider, interdisciplinary lecture series!
Our format is roughly thirty minutes per talk and usually invites audience participation or questions. You could tell us about your work (past presenters included night lifeguards, sports journalists, life drawing models and polar bear-tracking scientists), or your community, activist, or arts organizations (we’ve had tenant organizers like Parkdale Organize!, food recovery projects like Pizza Wheels & Jane’s Walk). Lectures and workshops on theory, arts, sciences, or the cruel vicissitudes of life under settler-colonialism are all welcome too.
Send us a pitch of a couple hundred words outlining what you’d like to say and what you’ll need to say it (like projectors, laptops, dates you can’t make, accessibility needs etc.). Potential nights are July 25,August 8 or August 22 so let us know you’re availability around that as well.
Small Talk warmly encourages the applications of lqbtq folks, people of colour & indigenous folks, and . . . well, everyone.
We can’t wait to hear from you.
WHAT IS SMALL TALK? Small Talk is an interdisciplinary lecture series and education project. That means we strive to be interdisciplinary across as many spectra of learning as possible. Not only across traditional academic disciplines, such as “art” vs “science” but also across less-commonly articulated divides such as that between “formal” and “informal” education. As such, Small Talk weighs academic material equally with traditional knowledge and experiential embodied learning. We believe that everyone knows something worth teaching and in turn everyone has something to learn – and our goal is to share knowledge collaboratively, creating a meaningful and empowering alternative learning space, placing special emphasis on passion and social change. We draw on a huge pool of passionate presenters, including activists, fine artists, community organizers, policy-makers, journalists of all types, technologists, and scientists to bring the hacker’s manifesto to higher learning– information wants to be free!
