Harvest Noon Contract Posting – Café Staff

Harvest Noon Café is seeking motivated, personable, and responsible individuals who have an interest in supporting the local, organic food movement to fill the position of Café Staff. Two (2) positions are available.

The Organization
Harvest Noon is an initiative of the Toronto Sustainable Food Co-operative (TSFC), made possible by the support of the University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union. Harvest Noon sources our food from local, organic farms and is committed to providing affordable, healthy, vegan and vegetarian food options on campus. Since opening in January 2012, we have relied on our team of volunteers for maintaining the day-to-day operations of the café, and in the summer of 2012, we added hired staff to our collective to better fulfill our mandate and expand the programming that we offer.
The Position
The role of Café Staff entails carrying out the day-to-day operations of the café, including food preparation, cooking, serving, engaging with customers, basic daily accounting, and clean-up. The position also entails working alongside café volunteers, other staff, and our café coordinator. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in gaining experience working in a non-profit environment and being a part of the good food movement.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to skillfully prepare healthy, delicious, vegan meals
- Interest in contributing to the local organic food movement
- Self-motivated, organized and reliable
- Excellent collaborative skills and a demonstrated ability to cooperatively share responsibility
- with volunteers and co-workers
- Excellent communication skills
- Professional experience in food service an asset
- Experience interacting with customers an asset
- Knowledge of local food systems and sustainable agricultural practices an asset
- Experience with not-for-profit, volunteer-supported and/or co-operative organizations an
- asset
- Food Safety Certified (or willingness to become certified before the position commences)
- Available to work weekdays
Position Terms
The Café Staff is a contract position for approximately 10 to 14 hours per week at a rate of $11 per hour. The position has a start date of September 10, 2012 through until December 21, 2012, with a potential option to renew the contract for the spring school term.

The Position
The primary work of the Treasurer entails end-of-week accounting duties such as making deposits, matching daily sales reports with deposits, managing the petty cash account and submitting weekly reports to the Board of Directors. Additional tasks including processing monthly expense claims and account statements and acting as a liaison between the Board and the bookkeeper. The Treasurer will also work with the Board to develop a projected annual budget for the organization. This is a great opportunity for individuals interested in gaining professional accounting and finance experience in a not-for-profit start-up.
Qualifications
- Experience with cash-handling and financial record-keeping
- Interest in contributing to the local, organic food movement
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented and accountable
- Excellent collaborative skills, demonstrated ability to work well with volunteers, staff and co-operative members
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability for high level of organization
- Experience with not-for-profit organizations an asset
Internship Terms
The Treasurer is an unpaid internship position of 3-5 hours per week. The contract is from September 6, 2012 through until December 21, 2012, with a potential option to extend the position for the spring school term.

The Position
The role of Café Coordinator entails managing the day-to-day and overall operation of the café; responsibilities include: food preparation and cooking, recipe creation and adaptation, orienting and directing volunteers, engaging with customers, food ordering, café inventory, food shopping runs, and coordinating meetings.
The Café Co-ordinator will spend approximately 15 hours per week in the café preparing food and overseeing general operations. The remaining hours will be spent on other duties related to food sourcing and menu planning, as described below:
- Coordinating weekly Menu Planning committee meetings; facilitating weekly menu creation in conjunction with Menu Planning committee; and, if necessary, bottom-lining weekly menu creation
- Weekly ordering and sourcing of food
- Weekly food and café supplies inventory
- Weekly food pick-ups and other shopping
The position entails ensuring a high level of quality and consistency in our service and operations, as well as attending to the general needs of our kitchen. The Café Coordinator will work alongside volunteers and our three café staff throughout the week, and will receive further help and guidance from our Board of Directors and other volunteer teams. The Café Coordinator is also required to maintain regular and clear communication with the Board of Directors through the submission of a weekly report. This is a great opportunity for individuals looking to take on the responsibility and challenge of running a café, and specifically for those with an interest in non-profits, co-operatives, and the good food movement.

- Excellent leadership, collaborative, and communication skills
- Experience with staff supervision and training
- Experience with not-for-profit, volunteer-supported and/or co-operative organizations
- Knowledge of vegan cuisine, local food systems, and sustainable agricultural practices
- Professional experience in food service and restaurant management an asset
- Experience with volunteer engagement and coordination an asset
- Food Safety Certified (or willingness to become certified before the position commences)
- Available to work weekdays
Position Terms
The Café Coordinator is a contract position for approximately 22 hours per week (five days per week, Monday through Friday, from approximately 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day) at a rate of $14 per hour. The position has a start date of September 10, 2012 through until April 30, 2013.
